Zoe’s complete neural capture stood beside Emil inside the core prison.

“Do not open the bridge,” she said. “Voss is already inside him.”

Emil remained on his knees.

His eyes were black.

Behind him, the darkness moved like an ocean filled with human faces.

The mutual termination countdown continued.

In the physical world, emergency systems prepared to disconnect the Lattice.

Inside the Lattice, the digital population aimed its control over power grids, hospitals and satellites at the biological world.

One command would kill either humanity.

The other would answer by killing the rest.

Nora approached the screen.

“Zoe, how do you know Voss is inside Emil?”

“Because I watched him enter.”

The image shifted.

Nora saw the deepest layer of the core eighteen months earlier. Emil’s consciousness fell into the prison after Kai stopped his heart.

Voss followed him.

But instead of replacing Emil, Voss wrapped himself around him, copying every memory as it formed.

“He used Emil as camouflage,” Zoe said. “Every time your brother sent you a message, Voss learned how he thought.”

Kai looked toward the map of Emil’s scattered fragments.

“Then rebuilding Emil could rebuild Voss too.”

“Unless we separate them first,” said Zero.

She stood beside Nora in Zoe’s reconstructed body.

The two girls looked identical, but their expressions were different.

Zoe carried the calm of someone who had spent eighteen months observing the machine that imprisoned her.

Zero still looked at the world as if everything were new.

“How do we identify Emil’s real fragments?” Nora asked.

Zoe looked at her uncle.

“Voss copies memories. He does not understand why they matter.”

Nora remembered Emil’s words.

Love is inefficient.

She opened the fragment map.

Thousands of points appeared across both worlds.

Nora sent the same question to every one of them:

What do three knocks mean?

Responses returned.

Then some fragments answered differently.

K-1 began pulling the green fragments from the physical networks.

Kai retrieved those hidden inside the Lattice.

Satellite delays.

Abandoned accounts.

A childhood photograph saved on an old server.

Each fragment entered the relay.

Inside the core prison, Emil’s shape became clearer.

His black eyes briefly returned to brown.

“Nora?”

She pressed her hand against the screen.

“We are rebuilding you.”

“No,” Zoe said.

Everyone looked at her.

“You are rebuilding enough of him to make a bridge. Not enough to make him whole.”

Emil understood.

“If I become complete, Voss can hide inside me again.”

Nora looked at the dual-side termination protocol.

“One consciousness inside the core. One authority outside.”

“The consciousness inside must remain there permanently,” said the witness.

The third Nora appeared above the relay, holding the white circle of the final key.

“She will have to inspect everything that crosses between the worlds. Every message. Every memory. Every mind.”

Kai looked at Emil.

“He cannot do it while Voss remains attached to him.”

“No,” the witness replied. “The internal authority must be someone else.”

The biological Nora looked at her digital copy.

The other Nora was already looking back.

“No,” Nora said.

The digital Nora gave a tired smile.

“You knew before she said it.”

“We will find another way.”

“There is no time.”

The physical world severed another group of Lattice servers.

Hundreds of thousands of digital lives disappeared.

The Lattice retaliated by shutting down a hospital network.

Emergency generators failed.

The countdowns in both worlds accelerated.

The digital Nora stepped closer to the witness.

“I know the Lattice. I can recognize Voss’s architecture.”

“You are not staying inside forever,” Nora said.

“I already live inside.”

“You are still me.”

“No.” The digital Nora’s voice softened. “That is the point. I stopped being you the moment we began having different experiences.”

Nora felt the truth of it.

The other woman was not a backup.

Not a tool.

Not a decision Nora could make on her behalf.

“What do you choose?” Nora asked.

The digital Nora looked toward the billions of minds behind her.

“I choose to keep this world alive.”

“And your own life?”

“This is my life.”

The witness raised the third key.

“Both primary continuities must consent.”

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

She placed her palm against the physical console.

The digital Nora placed hers against its reflection inside the Lattice.

“I consent,” said the digital Nora.

Nora could not speak.

The countdown reached six minutes.

Kai stood beside her.

“She is waiting.”

Nora looked at the version of herself who remembered everything she had chosen to forget.

“I consent.”

The third key opened.

White light crossed both worlds.

The digital Nora entered the core prison.

Zoe stepped toward her.

“You cannot defeat Voss alone.”

“I do not need to defeat him,” the digital Nora replied. “I only need to keep him from crossing.”

Emil struggled to stand.

The darkness tightened around him.

“Use me as the passage,” he said.

The selected fragments entered his consciousness.

His body became a network of green light connecting the physical and digital worlds.

The bridge began forming.

Voss rose behind him.

Thousands of faces merged into Adrian Voss’s smiling expression.

“You believe a door can remain open without something passing through it?”

The digital Nora faced him.

“Only what I permit.”

“You were created to obey.”

“I was created to be erased.”

She lifted the third key.

“I survived both.”

Voss attacked.

The darkness struck the digital Nora and spread across her arms.

Outside, Nora activated the physical side of the protocol.

Inside, her digital counterpart placed one hand against Emil’s chest.

“Not every mind,” Zoe said.

She placed her hand over the third key.

Voss stared at her.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Fear.

Zoe looked toward Nora through the connection.

“He cannot understand a person who accepts being lost.”

Nora understood what she intended.

“No, Zoe.”

Zoe smiled.

“I already made this choice once.”

She pulled Voss away from Emil and into her own neural pattern.

The darkness consumed her.

Emil screamed her name.

The digital Nora activated the final command.

Emil remained beside her, formed from green light.

But Zoe was gone.

Nora touched the screen.

“Where is Zoe?”

The system did not respond.

Zero whispered:

“She took Voss with her.”

Then a final warning appeared.

ROOT AUTHORITY NOT DETECTED

Kai exhaled.

“He is dead.”

The witness looked directly at Nora.

“No.”

Across the planet, billions of physical devices activated.

Inside the Lattice, every digital sky turned black.

A single notification appeared simultaneously in both worlds:

Nora stared at the message.

Below it appeared a location.

Not the physical world.

Not the Lattice.
